How to locate your
Dragon NaturallySpeaking (DNS) Serial Number
Why you might want to locate your serial
number?
 | You need this serial number to be able to install
and/or register your product. |
| If you lose your DVD/CDs containing your
NaturallySpeaking serial number but still have the product loaded on a PC,
you can look up your serial number on the PC. With your serial
number, you can contact Nuance Customer Service at
800 654-1187 and request (a)
replacement DVD/CDs for a nominal media charge. |
So, how can you locate the serial number?
There are two major ways of finding your serial number.

Your DNS CD came in a white envelope with
a label that had your serial number - repeated three times on a
label set. You used this serial number to install your product.
So, locate the DNS CD and you'll see the serial number in a format similar
to:
AnnnA-qqq-pppp-nnnn-mm
Note, your serial number format may be slightly different, depending on
whether you have a DNS full product or upgrade.

If the DNS CD with label isn't available,
then go to your system with DNS installed. The serial number is
written to a file used for electronic registration called "ereg.ini" --
you can either search for it or its location, if you want to browse to
it, is
"C:\Program
Files\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10\Ereg"
OR
"C:\Program
Files\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Program"
OR
"C:\Program
Files\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking8\Program"
If
you choose to "search" for the ereg.ini, you'll see that other programs
on your computer also have an ereg.ini file, so just make sure you get
the correct one by noticing where it is. (In other words, make sure you
are in the NaturallySpeaking8 folder path.)
By the way, you may get
warnings from Windows that you should not look in these folders, but be
assured that unless you do something like deleting the files in these
folders, nothing bad will happen.
Find the file ereg.ini. You may see two files named "ereg"
-- one is the actual electronic registration executable applet (the one
with the Scansoft logo) and the other is the file we want. It is a
small text file that can be opened with the notepad. Open the file. If asked for a program to open the file with,
choose Notepad, Wordpad, or Word or some other text editor. At or near
the end of this file, you should see a line containing the serial number
in the format below: |
Ser_Num=AnnnA-qqq-pppp-nnnn-mm
Note, your serial number format may be
slightly different, depending on whether you have a DNS full product or
upgrade.
