Dragon NaturallySpeaking® Professional Overview

Dragon NaturallySpeaking® Professional speech recognition software is a powerful productivity tool that enables corporate and professional users to work faster and more efficiently. Speak, and your words appear on screen and in letters, spreadsheets, and forms.  Dictate memos, reports, and other documents; enter data; fill-in forms; send e-mail; and work on the Web-all by voice!

Perform complex tasks on your computer with a spoken word or phrase, customize your vocabulary and commands to match your workflow, listen to incoming e-mail and documents read aloud, and much more.    Create your own documents on the spot or send your recorded dictation to be transcribed elsewhere.  

NaturallySpeaking®  Professional includes support for Bluetooth and other specialty microphones and allows dictation directly into a PC, Pocket PC, or an approved Recorder for personal or third-party transcription.   It even includes administrative tools for distributed network deployments and support for Citrix terminals.

Typical Users?  Dragon NaturallySpeaking® Professional is an ideal tool for  professionals within corporations, educational entities and government agencies that seek to increase productivity by making it faster and easier to create documents, fill-in forms, send email, and work on the Web.   Dragon NaturallySpeaking® software comes with a vocabulary of more than 250,000 standard and business terms.    See below for vocabulary optimization.
  
  Can the vocabulary be customized?  NaturallySpeaking® Professional provides many techniques for customizing your vocabulary.  The Vocabulary Builder™ feature analyzes your documents automatically to find and add new words, specialized terms, acronyms, and proper names.   It's easy to add new words/names/terms in batches or on-the-fly.  You can also create or import custom vocabularies for different specialties or interests.   To hit the ground running, consider contracting with IMAGE Management, your NaturallySpeaking® provider, for initial vocabulary customization.  See the end of this page for a link to our contract services information.

• Create custom voice commands (macros) to insert boilerplate, launch applications, fill-in forms or perform complex tasks.

  Special Capability for the commands you create:

  • DragonTemplates" with Fields      - New in V10!
    Easily add fields to your commands with the new "Variable" button in the MyCommands Editor.  Navigate to your fields easily by voice to enter text into the field or accept the field's default value that you provided when you created the original command. 

Examples of custom macros that can be created:

• You say: "Insert company overview"
  Resulting action: Your standard company description is automatically inserted in your document in the type size and style that you want.

• You select text and say: "Change color to red"
  Resulting action: The color of the selected text changes to red.

• You say: "Send Thank You Letter to Fred Customer"
  Resulting action: Your word processor is started, your standard organizational letterhead with "thank you" letter text is automatically opened, "Fred", "Customer" are inserted into their proper locations in the letter and your cursor is positioned in the next field so that you can dictate specifics about the purpose of the thank you letter.

• You say: "Fax to Mary Supplier"
  Resulting action: Your current document is "printed" to your fax software, "Mary Supplier" is entered into the fax "To" field, Mary's fax number is retrieved from a database or within your command and the fax is started.
   

Who creates the commands?  Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional includes thousands of commands for commonly used tasks and provides the additional ability to create custom voice commands.  The dictator, an organizational staff person, or your Certified Partner, IMAGE Management, can create your macros.   Open applications from the Start menu and switch from one application to another by speaking commands like "Start Internet Explorer."

Recommended System Requirements for NaturallySpeaking V10

NOTE:  The install process checks to make sure your system meets these minimum requirements. If your PC does not meet the minimums, the software will not install.

• Processor:   Recommend 2.4 GHz (1.6 GHz dual core) or equivalent processor  (Absolute minimum is Intel 1 GHz (or equivalent AMD processor))  
  Faster processors will yield faster performance!

• Additional Processor Requirement: SSE2 Support
  To improve the recognition speed by reducing computation time and latency, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 was designed to use SSE2 technology.  SSE2 is supported by almost all processors sold since 2006, but some systems that meet the processor speed requirement do not support SSE2.  Click here for info about a freeware utility that can tell you if your processor supports SSE2. 

• Memory:  Recommend 2 GB + RAM or more, depending on your desired applications.   (Absolute minimum is 1GB for Windows Vista or 512 MB for other supported operating systems.
  Examine your work to determine the memory requirements of all programs you need to run simultaneously.

• L2 Cache:  1MB.  (Absolute minimum is 512KB)

• Hard Disk Space:  1 GB free hard disk space.  Space needed can increase based on number of users and number of vocabularies per user.

• Operating System:   Microsoft® Windows® Vista or Vista SP1 (32-bit versions), Microsoft® Windows® XP SP2 or higher (32-bit versions - Home and Professional), 2000 (SP4 or higher) and Windows Service 2000/2003.

• Additional OS Support for Medical, Professional & Legal Editions

  • Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 4.0 or 4.5

• Audio System:  Creative® Sound Blaster® 16 or equivalent sound card capable of 16-bit recording (to plug microphone into) or microphone (purchased separately) with alternative connectivity (USB, BlueTooth, etc.)

• Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6 or higher to support online help (free download available at www.microsoft.com)

• DVD-ROM drive (required for installation of software)
  If you don't have a DVD-ROM on a needed PC, you can copy the install files to an accessible network drive or USB drive.  Also, Nuance has a software download site for customers if they do not have a DVD reader/player. We can help you liaise with Nuance Technical Support & Customer Service to gain access to this site.

• Speakers (required for hearing tutorial, playback of recorded speech and text to speech features)

• A web connection is required for activation

• Certified Microphone.  A Nuance-approved, noise-canceling headset microphone is included with each full copy of NaturallySpeaking but user may desire different style/connectivity microphones or extra microphones for use with additional PCs.  An UPGRADE does not include a microphone, because it is assumed the dictator is using the microphone from their original purchase.  Other/additional microphone options are available.

• Attaching a recorder (purchased separately) will require a port (USB, serial, etc. depending on the model.)

What comes with the product?

The product includes:  software on DVD (1 DVD), documentation and headset microphone.   An upgrade does not include a headset microphone.
