NaturallySpeaking Version 9

NaturallySpeaking Version 9 was announced July 18, 2006.

NaturallySpeaking® Version 9 Features (which are, of course, incorporated in Version 10):

This document includes just the highlights for each version.  If you want detail on what features were added in NaturallySpeaking Version 8, click to our NaturallySpeaking Version 8 upgrade description, which was retained for backward continuity.   Version 7 and Version 6 info is below the Version 8 info.

NOTE:  Some features are only available in the Pro products (Professional, Med and Legal)-- we have tried to indicate this fact with (Pro-Med-Legal).

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9:  Supports Microsoft Windows Vista®!

bulletNuance enhanced NaturallySpeaking V9 and has released the V9.5 Service Pack to provide this compatibility.  Note:  Nuance recommends increasing the minimum memory for Windows Vista® PCs to 1GB (up from 512MB) and, of course, more is recommended to handle the simultaneous running of your applications with NaturallySpeaking.  See the Nuance Vista Compatibility web page for more info.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: Unprecedented Speech Recognition Accuracy Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 is up to 20% more accurate than Version 8.

bulletExpanded language models and improved acoustic training techniques deliver the largest accuracy increase of any release in the history of Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 contains two new technical innovations that improve upon the core speech recognition accuracy. The two innovations are:
bullet PelAudio Acoustic Scale Score (PASS)- PASS represents the latest evolution of Dragon’s patented approach to speaker-dependent speech recognition. The implementation of PASS in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 involves taking a given phonetic element (“Pel”) and applying a series of complex statistical and algorithm transformations to create a per phonetic element PASS score that can then be used to develop higher accuracy results with greater confidence.
bulletSilentAdapt: SilentAdapt further improves speech recognition accuracy in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 by providing continuous acoustic adaptation without user intervention. The result is much improved accuracy and a simpler user experience as changes and modifications in acoustics are factored into the user’s profile transparently.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: No Speaker Enrollment Required

bullet(Headset microphone) new users can use Dragon NaturallySpeaking without reading the “enrollment scripts”.  This new feature will facilitate quick use of the product, when time is constrained, such as when new users are participating in training.  However, it is still recommended that users read an enrollment script for highest accuracy.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: Supports Enterprise Wide Deployments

bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 supports Citrix environments, enabling users to dictate from workstations that do not have Dragon NaturallySpeaking installed.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 makes your unique user speech profile available anywhere on the network, and automatically synchronizes updates and adaptations centrally.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 includes improved administrative tools that simplify administrators’ ability to manage vocabularies and custom commands among a community of users.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 comes with an all-new “IT Users Guide” which helps IT professionals deploy Dragon NaturallySpeaking across distributed environments.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: The Easiest Dragon NaturallySpeaking to Use

bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 comes with a complete set of new on-screen tutorials that simplify the training process, so you can be an expert Dragon NaturallySpeaking user right away.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 offers new “out of the box” support for non-standard editing controls, which enables complete Dragon functionality, such as “select and say” in many more applications.  New supported edit controls include Borland’s Tmemo, Tedit & TRichEdit controls as well as TE Edit from SubSystems and TX Text from TX Text Control.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 includes a new indicator that lets you know when you have “Select and Say” functionality available.
bulletThe Dragon NaturallySpeaking Command Browser is faster and easier to use than ever before.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: AutoTranscribe Folder

bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 includes an option to create a desktop folder to place digital dictations from a handheld device and have them transcribed automatically, thereby streamlining dictation workflow.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: Support for New Wireless Input Devices, Including Bluetooth

bulletWith Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9, you can use a Bluetooth microphone as an input device, meaning you are no longer tethered to your PC.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 also supports handheld digital recorders and other PDAs that record in .wma, .mp3, way and .dss formats for deferred transcription. For a full list of approved devices, contact us.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9: Supporting Your Favorite Applications

bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 supports most current releases of Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, Word Perfect, AOL and, with this release, support has been added for Mozilla FireFox and Thunderbird.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9 includes a new “Voice Notations” feature for Microsoft Word, which allows users to include un-transcribed instructions for third party editors.
bulletDragon NaturallySpeaking 9.5 supports Microsoft Windows Vista.  See our first bullet above for more info!

NaturallySpeaking Version 7

NaturallySpeaking Version 7 was announced on March 3, 2003.

NaturallySpeaking Version 7 Features (which are, of course, incorporated in Version 10):

To help home and office users achieve an increased level of productivity – and a more seamless interaction with their personal computer – ScanSoft has added a number of key capabilities to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7:

bullet

Most Accurate Ever – Significant improvements to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking recognition system has yielded an unprecedented accuracy improvement of up to 15% over the previous release, resulting in speech recognition accuracy levels as high as 99 percent.

bullet

Fastest Ever – More than 50 percent improvement in the initialization time of Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 enables “10 seconds to dictation” on baseline systems.  Users can train the software on their voice patterns in just five minutes.

bullet

Mainstream Dictation Through Natural Punctuation – While professionals are accustomed to speaking punctuations, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 brings speech recognition to mainstream users by eliminating the need to say “period” or “comma” when creating e-mail messages, sending instant message text or completing Web-based forms by voice.

bullet

Mobile Dictation with Pocket PC Devices – Users can now “talk-and-dock” using standard Pocket PC devices, in addition to handheld digital recorders, to record mobile dictation for automatic transcription when they synch to their PCs.

bullet

New Vocabulary Optimizer – Users can instruct Dragon NaturallySpeaking to instantly analyze sentence structure and word use frequency in previously created documents.  Dragon NaturallySpeaking then automatically adjusts the recognition engine to match the user’s unique writing patterns, thereby further increasing accuracy.

bullet

Most Accessible Ever Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 is the first desktop speech recognition solution to be certified as compliant with U.S. Section 508, which is focused on enabling the use of PC applications by persons with disabilities.  The product supports Section 508 screen readers, and also adds voice control capabilities to Microsoft Windows XP/NT/2000 and all standard PC applications.

bullet

Improved Proofing – The time and effort needed to proofread a document created by voice has been significantly reduced with ScanSoft RealSpeak Proofing, which reads email and document text aloud in a human-sounding synthesized voice.

bullet

New Performance Assistant Dragon NaturallySpeaking now optimizes itself for each user’s application usage patterns.

bullet

Accurate Voice Control of the PC – Dragon NaturallySpeaking has improved voice command and control capabilities, which allows users to use their voice to interact with the PC operating system and control application menus.  Most applications gain voice control capabilities by simply installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking onto the PC.

bullet

Expanded Custom Voice Shortcuts – The ability to create custom voice shortcuts, where a word or phrase will trigger the insertion of standardized text, has been expanded to support inserting text blocks and graphics.  Users can now create a custom voice shortcut for standard letter closings including a graphic of their signature and have it automatically added to their email or Microsoft Word correspondence by simply saying the shortcut command (i.e. “Add signature”.)

bullet

More ways to learn from your corrections. You can now select and correct a misrecognized word using voice, mouse, or keyboard-without going into a correction window-and Dragon NaturallySpeaking® 6 software can still learn from your correction.

bullet

The new correction workflow allows experienced users who prefer dictating an entire document before proofreading to quickly move through the document phrase by phrase and make corrections as needed. This feature is also helpful for transcriptionists.

bullet

Find commands more easily.  - A Sample Commands window is now available to display voice commands for the most popular applications alongside your work.    The new Command Browser lets you search for commands by application and keyword, making it easy to find what you need. Dragon NaturallySpeaking® scripting language commands from previous versions of the software are also supported. (Solution Series only)

bullet

Export and import your user files with the click of a button - Store your user files in any network directory or on removable media, such as a USB memory device, CD/RW disk, or Zip disk. Users can easily back up user files for safekeeping or to transfer them to another computer without copying files manually. This feature is especially helpful for users who wish to dictate at multiple workstations.

bullet

Empty dictation vocabulary - Users who wish to create a limited, special-purpose vocabulary can now build a custom dictation vocabulary from scratch, adding only the words that they need for their work.
